What is a neuromyth? A neuromyth is an erroneous belief about how the brain (or the mind) works that’s held by a substantial number of people. Neuromyths have become increasingly common, pervasive and, in some sense, represent a failure of the ‘public engagement’ that scientists are supposed to be doing. Now, neuromyths often have a kernel of truth or are at least a distortion of something much more reasonable, which makes them even harder to combat. But as so many people believe things about the brain that are so wrong, the consequences can be devastating, since they impinge upon areas like education.
